Baseball Drops Liberty League Tournament Opener To Union

ROCHESTER, NY (May 10, 2018) -- Union College starter Jake Vesling held the Vassar College baseball team to just four hits over nine innings, as the Brewers run through the Liberty League Tournament started with a 12-1 loss to the Dutchmen Thursday afternoon in play from Towers Field on the campus of the University of Rochester.

With the loss, Vassar (18-18) will take on the loser of Thursday evening's contest with host Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology, which defeated RPI 3-2 in the play-in game Thursday morning.

The Brewers fell behind early, as Union jumped out on top in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Sean Cullen. The Dutchmen added four more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to make the score 5-0.

VC would dent the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, as junior Jake Doyle opened the frame with a double. After moving to third on a fly ball by freshman Jason Salerno, Doyle came into score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Tanner Blough. That was as close as the Brewers would get, as Union tallied three in the sixth along with two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to roll to the win.

Vassar starter Alex Hartnett allowed three hits and one earned run over 2.1 innings of work. Junior reliever Joe Conti allowed no runs and two hits over his 1.1 innings, while freshman Hawkins Hodges came on and got the only batter he faced.

Cullen posted a 4-for-5 day with two RBI, while Sam Kirschenbaum was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Colin Kelly was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, and Anthony Amoroso, Wiley Knight, Harrison Glatt, Andy Labeck and Jack Koch powered the Dutchmen offense to 21 hits.

VC will take on either RIT or Rochester Friday morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
