CANTON, NY (April 8, 2018) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team pushed past host St. Lawrence University 7-2 in the second of two Liberty League matches this weekend, as the No. 31 Brewers moved to 11-3 and 5-0 in conference play with the victory in action from Newell Field House.
Vassar jumped out in front at No. 3 doubles, as freshman
Frances Cornwall and senior
Courtney Geiss cruised to an 8-2 victory to earn their second victory together. St. Lawrence evened the match at 1-1 at the top spot in doubles, as Lia Peterson and Emily Wyman of SLU (5-9, 3-1) knocked off sophomore
Tara Edwards and junior
Morgane Flournoy 9-8, taking the tie-breaker 7-3.
With the balance of heading into singles play with the lead, Vassar's No. 2 pair of freshman
Sarra Yekta and senior
Dasha Ivenitsky continued their amazing play together, rolling to an 8-3 to improve to 8-1 on the season together. The duo is now 3-0 in conference play and has won their last six doubles' matches together.
The Brewers took a 3-1 lead early in singles action, as Cornwall was stellar at the No. 1 position, winning her fourth straight with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Wyman. The Brewers saw Geiss get her second win of the day at No. 3 singles with 6-4, 6-4 scores, moving VC to within one of the victory at 4-1. Geiss is now 14-8 this season, has won her last four and seven of her last 10 matches.
VC would clinch the match in a thriller at No. 5, as Flournoy posted a 6-3 win in the first set but dropped the second 6-4. In the third set, Flournoy led 6-5 and was able to earn the win with a 7-5 third set victory. For the third straight match, Yekta won her singles match without dropping a game, taking her sixth straight victory and eighth in her last 10. Ivenitsky stepped into the No. 6 position and also picked up a victory, clinching her Liberty League win with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
The Brewers will finish their three game road swing next Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m., taking on the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (8-4, 1-3) in Troy, NY.
