Women's Tennis Ups Win Streak to Five With 9-0 Win Over RPI

LATHAM, NY (April 14, 2018) -- Sophomore Tara Edwards chalked up No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles victories on Saturday, helping lead the Vassar College women's tennis team to its fifth straight win with a 9-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in action from Tri-City Fitness Center. 

The Brewers swept doubles action, as Edwards teamed with junior Morgane Flournoyfor an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Sarra Yekta and senior Dasha Ivenitsky upped their record on the season to 9-1 with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while freshman Meghan Rodick and senior Courtney Geiss moved to 5-1 in doubles together with an 8-0 blanking at No. 3 doubles. 

In singles, Vassar was able to sweep the Engineers (8-5, 1-4 Liberty), as freshman Frances Cornwall improved her win streak to five matches with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top position over Mailani Neal. Edwards chalked up her second win of the day at No. 2 singles, matching Cornwall with a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while Rodick posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to up her winning streak to five matches. 

The Brewers saw two more players earn their second victory of the day at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, as Geiss picked up a solid 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 to moved to 15-8 this season, while Flournoy gutted out a three-set win with scores of 6-2, 0-6, 11-9 in the super-tiebreaker. Sophomore Ashley Fair stepped into the No. 6 spot for the Brewers, and continued her perfect singles season with a 6-0, 6-0 win to move to 10-0 on the season including a 4-0 Liberty League record. 

Vassar (12-3, 6-0 Liberty) will now look forward to next weekend's anticipated battle with ranked Skidmore College (11-3, 6-0 Liberty), as the two Liberty League undefeated squads square off Saturday, April 21 at 12 p.m. on Joss Courts here in Poughkeepsie.
