POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 7, 2018) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team, ranked No. 31 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, started a long Liberty League weekend with an emphatic 9-0 victory over host Rochester Institute of Technology in play from the Midtown Tennis Club Saturday.

The Brewers (10-3, 4-0 Liberty League) have won their last three matches overall, going into tomorrow's big conference bout in Canton, NY against St. Lawrence University (5-8, 3-0 Liberty). Saturday's match though was all Vassar, as the Brewers took all three doubles points before sweeping singles as well.

Freshman Frances Cornwall and sophomore Vista Grinde paired together for the first time to roll to an 8-1 win over Annie Steinbrink and Maddy Price at No. 3 doubles.

The top pairing of Vassar finished off doubles with another decisive victory, as sophomore Tara Edwards and junior Morgane Flournoy posted an 8-3 win to up their conference record to 4-5.

In singles, VC needed just two wins to clinch the match and got them with the first two decisions to come finals. Senior Courtney Geiss, who has now won six of her last 10 matches, rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 to push Vassar to a 4-0 edge. The clinching point came from Cornwall at No. 1 singles, as she posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Amelia Ying to earn her 10th singles win of the 2017-18 campaign.

Despite the match being wrapped up, Vassar kept its foot on the gas, as Edwards picked up her second win of the day with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Shayna Ginster. Flournoy would also pick up her second victory in similar fashion, winning the first set before having to rally to take the match in a third set with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Yekta for the second straight week won her match with perfect results of 6-0, 6-0, and hasn't lost a set since the first set against CalTech, taking her last five sets by a 6-0 scoreline. She has also won her last five matches and seven of the last nine. The final match was at No. 6 singles, and sophomore Ashley Fair upped her singles' record this year to a perfect 9-0 with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Julia Smolowitz of RIT (8-4, 2-3 Liberty).
