Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

No. 13 MIT Tops Vassar Women's Tennis Sunday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 22, 2018) -- The No. 31 ranked Vassar College women's tennis team hosted No. 13 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon, falling to the Engineers 9-0 in action from Josselyn Tennis Courts in non-conference action.

Despite the 9-0 scoreline, Vassar battled hard in all three doubles matches along with having some standout matches in singles. VC saw freshman Sarra Yekta and senior Dasha Ivenitsky push Dora Tzeng and Sonya Das at No. 2 doubles, stringing together a lot of strong points, but fell 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, Courtney Geiss and Meghan Rodick were also strong but couldn't pull out an 8-5 decision to Lara Rakocevic and Kelly Zhu.

In singles, Geiss played brilliantly in the opening set to cruise to a 6-0 victory. She came out of the gate playing confident, smart tennis and continued to play extremely solid tennis throughout her match. Rakocevic responded by getting a break and earning the second set 6-3. In the super-tiebreaker, both competitors were stready, but Rakocevic was able to pull out the highly contested 10-8 score.

At No. 5 singles, Yekta and Marina Zhang played a 6-4, 6-4 score, but the match went over three and a half hours, and the shot making was superb. Despite the loss, Yekta hit a ton of winners and showed her solid shot-making abilities.

"I was extremely proud of the way each and every player on our team competed and fought for every point today," said assistant coach Mark Chace. "Competing so well against a top 10 nationally ranked team such as MIT should really boost the morale of our team and give us great confidence going into the Liberty League championships in 2 weeks."

Vassar will now focus on William Smith College and Senior Day Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m. on Josselyn Tennis Courts, where they will honor their four seniors, Geiss, Ivenitsky, Lauren DiFazio and Kate Christensen
