Christensen Wins 100th Career Match As Women's Tennis Tops Herons, 8-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 28, 2018) -- Senior Kate Christensen earned her 100th career victory on Saturday afternoon, helping the Vassar College women's tennis team to an emphatic 8-1 victory over William Smith College in action from Joss Courts on a gorgeous spring day in Poughkeepsie.

The Brewers (13-5, 7-1 Liberty League) clinched a bye in the Liberty League Tournament next weekend at Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University, which will be played Friday-Sunday, March 4-6 in Ithaca, NY. The afternoon was also special for the team as VC honored its four seniors in Christensen, Courtney Geiss, Lauren Difazio and Dasha Ivenitsky

The day started out well for the Brewers, posting an early 8-2 victory at No. 2 thanks to Ivenitsky and freshman Sarra Yekta, as the duo finished Liberty League play 5-1 in conference action while upping their season mark to 10-3 together.

The milestone win for Christensen came next for the Brewers, as she earned her 100th career victory over both singles and doubles with an 8-4 win with Morgane Flournoy at the No. 1 spot. Christensen missed nearly two months of the season, so to come back and earn the victory was a meaningful moment for the All-American senior.

William Smith would pick up the final point in doubles, but Vassar came out in singles and dominated from the get go, not dropping a set to the Herons. Freshman Meghan Rodick made the score 3-1 at No. 4 singles as she earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory to up her seasonal record to 16-6 and 4-1 in conference action. Sophomore Tara Edwards earned a straight set  win at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win to push VC to within one of the victory.

The clinching point came at No. 6 singles, as Yekta upped her conference record to 5-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph. Yekta has now posted 30 victories this year over singles and doubles. Geiss picked up a Senior Day memory with a singles win at No. 5, rolling to a 6-0, 6-4 win, while Christensen doubled her victory total for the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win as she played singles for the first time this spring.

The final win of the day for the Brewers came at the No. 2 spot, as freshman Frances Cornwall fended off Michaelann Denton 6-0, 6-4 as she moved to 5-1 in Liberty League play.

"I am very proud of the way every member of our team played with great focus and intensity in today's match," said assistant coach Mark Chace. "Our players knew the importance of this match going in and that a victory would ensure a second seed for us in next weekend's Liberty League Tournament."

Vassar will find out its side of the bracket in the coming days, taking on the winner of the No. 3 and No. 6 seed matchup taking place on Friday, March 4 at Cornell.
