TROY, NY (April 20, 2018) – The Vassar women's lacrosse team got back to their winning ways as they topped Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 12-10, in Liberty League action from Troy, NY.
The offense was paced by a six-point outing from
Kelly Pushie, which matched her career-high, as she recorded two goals and four assists against the Engineers.
Storm Sideleau poured in four goals while both
Olivia O'Loughlin and
Alessandra Fable chipped in two.
Tessa Waters and Fiona MacLeaod both added on score with MacLeod also dishing out two helpers.
The two teams traded pairs of goals early in the game as the home side built a 4-2 lead 10 minutes into the game. Vassar then score four straight and seven of the next eight goals to grab a 9-5 advantage. Fable began the run as Pushie assisted on the tally. Next was a score by Waters followed by an O'Loughlin tally assisted by Pushie. Two more Sideleau goals and a marker from O'Loughlin had the Brewers up 8-5 at the break.
In the second half, Sideleau wasted no time to score her fourth of the day just one minute and one second into the frame. RPI then put together back-to-back scores before Fable and Pushie extended the Brewer lead to four. Maddy Aslansan again cut the Vassar lead to two, but Pushie's final tally of the day gave Vassar a 12-9 lead.
With 10:42 left to play, the Engineers score their 10
th goal of the day before the Brewer defense clamped down and held on to their two-goal lead.
Emily Chancey made four of her nine saves in those final 10 minutes to keep the surging RPI offense at bay.
Six different Brewers recorded a caused turnover on the day.
Tessa Waters led Vassar with five draw controls while
Tillie Newcomb's five groundballs were a team-high.
Vassar faces No. 20 Ithaca College in Liberty League action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
