Vassar Women's Tennis Match Notes - No. 17 Skidmore, No. 13 MIT

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 21, 2018) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team return to Poughkeepsie this weekend to battle it out with fellow Liberty League opponents Skidmore College on Saturday and out of league opponents MIT on Sunday. The Brewers are coming off of a 9-0 victory last Saturday against Rensselaer.

Last Time Out: 
The Brewer team swept Rensselaer 9-0 in Troy this weekend, with help from No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles victories from sophomore Tara Edwards.  In doubles play, the No. 1 slot was held by Edwards and junior Morgane Flournoy with an 8-5 win, followed by a No. 2 victory from Freshman Sarra Yekta and senior Dasha Ivenitsky, winning 8-2. 
 
Freshman Meghan Rodick and senior Courtney Geiss moved to 5-1 in doubles together with an 8-0 blanking at No. 3 doubles.  In singles, freshman Frances Cornwall improved her win streak to five matches with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top position.  Geiss and Sophomore Ashley Fair also recorded singles wins on the day, where Fair improved her perfect singles season to a record of 6-0 overall and 4-0 in league play.
 

A Look At The No. 30 Brewers (11-3, 5-0 Liberty League):
  • The Brewers are currently No. 1 in the Liberty League, No. 13 in the Northeast, and No. 31 in the nation. 
  • Ten Brewers are undefeated in the conference in singles play this season, giving the squad a .944 win percentage in Liberty League matches to contribute to a .635 overall win percentage.
  • Four Brewers are on a winning streak of four or more in singles: Frances Cornwall and Meghan Rodick have each won their last five matches, Sarra Yekta her last six, and Ashley Fair her last 10.
  • The Brewers have proven strong in doubles play, winning 94.4% of conference matches and 78.9% of overall matches in pairs.
  • At No. 2 doubles the Brewers are winning 86.7 % of their matches, helped significantly by Dasha Ivenitsky and Sarra Yekta's 8-1 record.
  • Yekta and Tara Edwards are tied for most doubles matches played, with 21 each; Edwards is 13-8 while Yekta is 17-4.
 
A Look At The No. 17 Thoroughbreds (11-4, 6-0 Liberty League):
  • The Thoroughbreds are coming off of a tough out of league loss to #4 Middlebury College last Sunday.
  • Overall, the Thoroughbreds post a .579 win percentage in singles, and are undefeated in Liberty League play. They hold a .556 win percentage in doubles play overall, and are again undefeated against Liberty League opponents.
  • The Thoroughbreds have defeated four ranked opponents on the season, with wins over No. 15 Johns Hopkins, No. 16 Mary Washington, No. 22 Brandeis and No. 32 Wellesley.
  • Renee Karchere-Sun holds a team best overall record with 15-7 in singles, and is tied with teammate Ada Wiggins in league play with a record of 6-0.
  • Skidmore boasts a .800 win percentage in the No. 3 spot in singles, lead by Karchere-Sun's 6-2 record and Fukushige's 4-1 record.
  • Michelle Fuca, Risa Fukushige, and Karchere-Sun have won seven of their last ten games, and teammate Jessica Ampel is on a four game win streak.
  • Fuca and Wiggins lead Skidmore in doubles wins at the No. 1 spot with four, followed by Fukushige/ Wiggins and Fuca/ Fukushige, with both pairs having won three sets on the season.
 
A Look At The No. 13 Engineers (12-1):
  • MIT is ranked No. 13 nationally and No. 6 in the Northeast in the ITA rankings. Senior Elysa Kohrs is ranked sixth in the Northeast.
  • The Engineers are coming into the weekend with momentum after six straight wins, including a 9-0 win over no. 33 Wellesley College on April 17.
  • Elysa Kohrs leads the team in singles performance this year, going undefeated in 11 matches at the no. 1 position.
  • Freshman Libby Rickerman has had a phenomenal debut season, with an 8-1 record at the No. 2 position and a No. 11 spot in the ITA Northeast Rankings.
  • MIT has six wins over ranked opponents this season, with wins over No. 14 Bowdoin College and No. 15 Washington and Lee.
  • The Engineers are yet to lose a conference singles' match, posting a 30-0 record. The Engineers are also undefeated at the No. 1 position with a record of 13-0.
  • The doubles team of Elysa Kohrs and Libby Rickerman has lead the Engineers this year with a 9-2 record at the No.1 position, good for a No. 7 spot in the ITA Northeast ranking. Sonya Das and Dora Tzeng is not far behind, with ten wins and two losses so far this year, with a record of 5-1 at both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position.
 
Up Next: The Brewers return for their last home match of the season on Saturday, April 28th to face off with William Smith College. Vassar will celebrate the careers of seniors Kate Christensen, Lauren DiFazio, Courtney Geiss, and Dasha Ivenitsky.
