POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 6, 2018) – The Vassar women's lacrosse team fell to 1-1 on the season after a 15-7 loss to No. 18 Wesleyan University on Tuesday night.
Storm Sideleau led the Vassar offense with three points off three goals against the Cardinals. A trio of Wesleyan players recorded hat tricks on the day, led by Abby Manning's three goals and three assists.
Helping Sideleau and the Brewers was
Olivia O'Loughlin with two scores,
Fiona MacLeod with two assists, and
Tessa Waters and
Kelly Pushie each recording an assist.
Wesleyan showed their prowess in the first half, claiming a 10-3 lead in the first 30 minutes. The Cardinals were on the board first, but Vassar answered minutes later with Sideleau's first goal. But nine straight goals from Wesleyan put the Brewers in a hole they could not climb out of. O'Loughlin and Sideleau were score before the halftime buzzer to for a seven-goal deficit at the midway point.
In the second half, the Brewers scored two quick goals. Sideleau carved up the Cardinal defense for her third score of the day. Then Pushie received a great pass from MacLeod and buried it for a goal to cut the lead to just five. But Wesleyan got back on track scoring five of the next six goals to thwart a Vassar comeback. Down by nine with just under two minutes to go, O'Loughlin tallied a free position goal for the final score of the day.
The Brewers were outshot 30-18 and 22-13 with shots on goal. The two sides were evenly matched on the draw, with each team winning 12. O'Loughlin and Waters each had four draw controls to lead the Brewers in that statistic.
Emily Chancey made her second start this season, playing the full 60 minutes between the pipes. The junior made seven saves in net.
Vassar's next two contests will be played in the sunny state of Florida as they head south for the Spring Fling to face Kean on March 13 and Westfield State on March 15.
