POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 31, 2018) – The Vassar women's lacrosse team dropped to 1-1 in the Liberty League after a 17-7 loss to Clarkson University on Weinberg Field.
The Brewers' seven goals was their lowest scoring output of the season against the second-best scoring defense in the league with the Golden Knights only allowing 6.67 goals per game. The Brewers were forced into 21 turnovers and managed just 19 total shots on the day.
Clarkson scored early and often as they built a 7-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of the contest. On Vassar's first shot attempt of the day,
Alessandra Fable found the back of the net at the 13:28 mark. Two minutes later,
Olivia O'Loughlin scored the Brewers' second goal to make it 2-7 at that point.
One more Vassar goal, bookended by Clarkson tallies had the halftime score at 9-3 in favor of the visitors. The Brewers third goal of the day came from
Kelly Pushie unassisted as she wrapped around the net for the score.
The Golden Knights began the second half just as they started the game, with a long scoring run. This time it was a 5-0 run spanning nearly nine minutes.
Fiona MacLeod then registered her first score of the day at the 19:21 mark of the second half. She would go on to score Vassar's next two goals to record a hat trick, but with the Clarkson offense continuing to score the Brewers were still down 10. With just over a minute to play, Pushie tallied her second of the afternoon to cut it to nine, but once again the Golden Knights found the back of the net to pit the final score 17-7.
MacLeod (three goals, one assist) and Pushie (two goals, two assists) each recorded four points on the afternoon to lead the Brewers. Fable tallied one goal and one assist while O'Loughlin scored just once.
Clarkson was led by an eight-point afternoon from Jaid Baytos (six goals, two assists) while Abby Collins and Aubrey Borgesi each tallied four goals.
The Brewers held the advantage in draw controls at 14-11 led by
Adele MacEwen's eight. MacLeod and
Sydney Nemphos each caused three turnovers to lead Vassar in the category.
Senior
Emily Chancey made her seventh start in goal for the Brewers, picking up 10 saves on the day.
Vassar gets back at it on Friday, hosting the Tigers from RIT at 4:00 p.m. on Weinberg Field.
