LA VERNE, CA (March 17, 2018) -- The Leopards of the University of La Verne posted six runs in the third inning and that was the difference as the Vassar College baseball team saw it's win streak snapped with a 10-3 loss on the road in action from Ben Hines Field in La Verne, CA.
Vassar fell behind early in the bottom of the first inning after a wild pitch scored a run for the Leopards (10-8), but the Brewers responded in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs. In the frame, senior
Bobby Kinne touched off his second homer of the season, a solo blast that easily cleared the wall in right center field.
The Brewers weren't done in the inning, as freshman
Elliott Layne was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. The next batter,
Evan Trausch, worked the count full and ripped a double to left-center field to score Layne.
The host Leopards would come right back, plating six runs in the bottom half of the third to make the score 7-2, with the big blow coming on a three-run triple by Brandon Vogel. Vassar trimmed the lead down to four in the top of the sixth thanks to a Matt Schwarz single to score
Daniel Bonfiglio, who earlier reached on a single.
La Verne chalked up three more in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the win. Vassar finished with six hits, all by different players, while senior
Chris Lee went 1-for-2 and threw out a runner attempting to steal.
Freshman
Hawkins Hodges came out of the bullpen to toss 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, and sophomroe
Mitchell Mullock also worked a 1-2-3 inning for the Brewers. Freshman
Logan Willans was lights out for Vassar as well out of the 'pen with two scoreless innings, striking out five of the six outs he got.
Vassar will be back in action Sunday afternoon, taking on Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA at 11 a.m. Pacific time in more non-conference play from California.
