Brewer Men's Squash Topped By Ranked SLU, UR In Liberty League Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 4, 2018) -- The Vassar College men's squash team played host to the second day of the 2018 Liberty League Championships in Kenyon Hall Sunday afternoon, dropping a pair of matches to No. 8 University of Rochester and eventual champion No. 4 St. Lawrence University.

The Brewers were knocked off by Rochester in the opening match of the day, though VC battled up and down the ladder against the highly-ranked Yellowjackets. No. 1 player Viraj Nadkarni tested Ricardo Lopez before dropping an 11-6, 11-8 and 11-7 decision, while freshman No. 2 Mathieu Rizk pushed the first game to extra points but was knocked off by Matthew Toth 12-10, 11-3 and 11-4. The depth was a little too much for VC in the end, as U of R rolled to the win.

In the final match of the Championships, St. Lawrence used its momentum from earning wins in the previous three matches of the weekend to earn the 9-0 victory. Rizk played a solid match again at No. 2 but was knocked off by Mustafa Bayoumy 11-2, 11-6 and 11-5, and Caden Gruber played well against a strong opponent in Belal Nawar before falling 11-4, 11-3 and 11-6 at No. 3.

St. Lawrence was crowned as the Liberty League champions for the fifth consecutive season, and now hold the all-time lead alone for conference crowns with seven, breaking a tie with Rochester. Hobart was 2-2 on the weekend, while Bard College was 1-3 to take fourth in the tournament.

The Brewers will head to Clinton, NY next weekend to take on No. 26 Hamilton along with No. 59 Colgate in action starting at 11 a.m. at host Hamilton College.
