POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 3, 2018) – The Vassar men's basketball team fell 59-76 to the hands of Union College on Saturday afternoon in the AFC. With the loss, the Brewers dropped to 5-8 in Liberty League play.
Paul Grinde led the Vassar scoring with 16 points and four rebounds.
Zach Bromfeld added 13 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks,
B.J. White nine points, four assists, and three boards, while
Lance Tebay chipped in six points, nine rebounds, and a block.
Kevin Weckworth of Union led all scorers with 28 points on 9-20 shooting including 8-10 from the free-throw line.
The Dutchmen led wire-to-wire and never let Vassar ahead. Union built a 10-point lead in the first half, holding a 27-17 advantage at the 6:56 mark. Tebay knocked down a triple to cut into the lead while Bromfeld added two more layups before White hit a layup before the end of the half. The Dutchmen tried to sneak one more score in before the buzzer, but Bromfeld rejected Weckworth to keep the score at 27-32.
The Brewers got within six points of Union at the 13:05 mark, before the Dutchmen ran away. Free-throws from Grinde and a three-pointer from
Jesse Browne had the score at 42-48, but Union then put together a 22-8 scoring run that lasted nine minutes and left Vassar in a 20-point hole.
Vassar matches up with Skidmore on Tuesday night in Saratoga Springs at 8:00 p.m. for the next contest.
