SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (February 6, 2018) – Thanks to three free throws from freshman
B.J. White with no time left on the clock, the Vassar men's basketball team left Skidmore with a 72-71 win over the Thoroughbreds.
Down by two with four ticks left on the clock, the freshman had the ball and was fouled on a three-point attempt. With zeros on the clock, White stepped to the line and hit all three free-throws to give Vassar their sixth league win of the season and made it a clean sweep over Skidmore this season.
White had a career-high 12 points on the night while hauling in four rebounds and handing out two assists. Senior
Jesse Browne led the Brewers with his eighth 20-point effort of the season, tallying 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Paul Grinde poured in 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists while
Zach Bromfeld nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
The Brewers held the early advantage in the game at 9-1 just two and half minutes in. But Skidmore would get going and tie the game at 17-17 nearly halfway through the first. As the lead went back and forth, the Thoroughbreds took control and captured a five-point lead heading into the break.
Vassar opened the second half with a 12-5 scoring run capped off by a Browne fast break layup to knot the score at 47-47. Two minutes later, with the score still tied,
Mason Dyslin converted the and-one play to put the Brewers up by three. Skidmore would regain the lead nearly two minutes later after a three-pointer by Edvinas Rupkus.
After the Thoroughbreds ran their lead up to seven, Vassar cut it to just two with 1:15 on the clock. The Brewers answered on every Skidmore bucket and finally took back the edge when Grinde put in a layup with 11 seconds to go for a one-point lead. Rupkus quickly converted a layup and a free throw at the other end to put the Thoroughbreds up two. But White responded and was fouled on his three-point attempt on the next possession and knocked down the free-throws for the win.
The Brewers host RIT and RPI this weekend in their final home stand of the regular season.
