Men's Lacrosse Drops Road Test At Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, NJ (February 28, 2018) – The Vassar men's lacrosse team went south to compete against the Red Hawks of Montclair State University in their second game of the season.

The Brewers took an early lead with a goal by Kyle Cherry, assisted by Nick Diamond, in the first quarter with 12 minutes remaining. The Red Hawks became more offensively dominant and earned two goals of their own. In the second quarter, the Brewers began to take more control of the game with a goal by Dekker Stebel, tying the score at 2-2. The Red Hawks then responded with three goals of their own. Drew Adams scored a goal in the second quarter, helping close the deficit before halftime.

The Brewers entered the third quarter down 3-6. VC picked up another goal in the third quarter by Austin Mello, assisted by Michael Mullen just about one minute into the half. The Red Hawks continued to put offensive pressure on the Brewers, scoring three goals of their own in the frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Brewers were down 4-9. Early in the stanza, a penalty against Montclair State University gave the Brewers an extra man opportunity that Stebel was able to exploit and score. Matt Boyd then made a terrific save on the other end, changing the momentum for the Brewers. Unfortunately the momentum was not enough to over take the Red Hawks who scored two more goals to close out the game.

Boyd started in net and played all 60 minutes where he made 14 saves. The Brewers as a team struggled at the faceoff "X", going 5-19 against Montclair. They were also unable to capitalize on Red Hawk penalties, going 0-5 on their man up possessions.

The Brewers will return home to compete against Swarthmore College on Saturday, March 3rd at 12:00 p.m. on Weinberg Turf Field.
