Women’s Tennis Claims Fourth Straight Seven Sisters Title Sunday

NORTHAMPTON, MA (February 25, 2018) – The Vassar College women's tennis team, ranked No. 40 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 40 poll, earned its fourth straight Seven Sisters title Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Bryn Mawr College before defeating No. 32 Wellesley College 4-1 in action from the Indoor Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Smith College.

Vassar chalked up a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend, as senior Courtney Geiss earned All-Seven Sisters honors as an individual, while sophomore Tara Edwards and junior Morgane Flournoy along with the pair of senior Dasha Ivenitsky and freshman Sarra Yekta were both doubles' All-Seven-Sisters as well.

The Brewers started the day with an easy win over Bryn Mawr College, cruising to the win by sweeping all five matches. Sophomore Vista Grinde and freshman Meghan Rodick partnered together to knock off Hannah Sherman and Lizzie Siegle of BMC 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Rachael Hahn and sophomore Ashley Fair also pushed past Caroline Horvatis and Mariam Haider in No. 2 doubles 8-5.

In singles play, Edwards lost only one of 13 games played at the No. 1 position, while Yekta also needed only one game over the minimum to post the 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 slot, senior Lauren DiFazio earned the first set 6-0, and fended off Christina Xue 7-5 in the second set to complete the 5-0 victory.

The win over Bryn Mawr set up the battle of unbeaten teams in the Seven Sisters finale, as VC and Wellesley took on each other for the Seven Sisters titles. Vassar was looking for its 15th Seven Sisters title, while Wellesley was in search of its 14th to pull even with VC.

The Brewers started out with a bang in doubles play, as Ivenitsky and Yekta pushed past Abigail Schleichkorn and Korina Hernandez at No. 2 doubles 8-2. Edwards and Flourney also were amazing at No. 1 doubles, earning all eight games played to sweep the match 8-0 over Michelle Buyer and Lily Chu to take a 2-0 edge going to singles.

In individual play, VC needed just one match to earn the title, and that came at No. 3 singles as Geiss chalked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sojin Ki to help the Brewers clinch the title. Rodick also had no issues at No. 2 singles against Selina Peng, earning a 6-2, 6-0 straight set win. VC's only defeat of the weekend came at No. 1 singles match against Wellesley, as freshman Frances Cornwall was topped by Justine Huang, 6-0, 6-2.

"What an amazing and total team effort," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "Absolutely everyone contributed on and off the court. We played better with each match, winning four of the five matches last night in deciding tiebreaks was remarkable and is probably some kind of record. Our players really stepped up their levels against Wellesley in the finals, winning four of the matches in dominating fashion."

Vassar (6-1) will be back on the courts over its Spring Break trip to California, taking on Bowdoin College at University High School at 10 a.m. PST in Irvine, CA.
