SIMSBURY, CT (February 25, 2018) – The Vassar men's squash team finished the season on a high note as they secured fifth place at the Serues Cup with a 6-3 win over Brandeis on Sunday morning.
After losing their first match at CSA Nationals to Northwestern, Vassar came back with wins on Saturday and Sunday over Bryant and Brandeis to win the Consolation Final.
The Brewers finished their season with an 8-16 overall mark, their most wins since the 2011-12 season in which they won 10 matches.
Against the Judges, the top four players shined for Vassar. Starting with No. 4,
Alex Riccio earned a four-game win over EK Chang (11-6, 11-6, 10-12, 12-10). Next at No. 3,
Caden Gruber took down Charles Blumberg in three (12-10, 11-3, 11-8). In the second spot, freshman
Mathieu Rizk played four games to defeat Muhammed Furqan Shai (10-12, 11-5, 11-5, 13-11). And in the top spot,
Viraj Nadkarni posted a clean sweep over Michael Jiang (11-8, 11-6, 11-9.
The other two wins for Vassat came from
Milind Joshi in the sixth spot and
Sohaib Nasir at No. 8. Joshi played five games as he dropped the first two to come storming back and take the final three (6-11, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9). And in the eighth spot, Nasir was also forced to play the full five. He won the first two, but dropped the next two before claiming the final game (11-9, 13-11, 5-11, 9-11, 12-10).
