POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 24, 2018) – The Vassar men's lacrosse team used a strong second quarter to distance themselves from Drew University en route to a 12-7 season opening win on Weinberg Field.
The game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter where
Matthew Lowery and
Dekker Stebel each tallied a goal. But in the second frame, the Brewers put up five to the Rangers' one to open a 7-3 at the half.
Austin Mello,
James Thomas, and
Michael Mullen scored three straight to open the second frame. While
Joseph Bradley and Mullen's second score of the day closed out the half. The faceoff game was a big advantage in the second quarter as the Brewers went 7-7 at the "X" to maintain possession of the ball. Overall on the day, they won 16 of 22 draws, led by Lowery's 13-17 effort.
Vassar stayed strong in the second half outscoring Drew 5-4 over the final two quarters. Stebel, Mullen, and Thomas added scores in the third frame. And to close things out in the fourth,
Tomás Meade and Thomas finished the game off with two more. Meade's tally at the 10:02 mark would go down as his first collegiate goal.
Matt Boyd started and played all 60 minutes in the cage for Vassar. He logged seven saves to go along with the first win of the season.
The Brewers next play on Wednesday, February 28 at 6:00 p.m. at Montclair State.
