Women's Basketball Falls By One At Ithaca

ITHACA, NY (February 17, 2018) – The Vassar women's basketball team ended their regular season with a nail biting one-point defeat, 63-64, at Ithaca on Saturday afternoon.

The Brewers wrapped up regular season play with a 16-9 overall mark and an 11-7 conference record, slotting them as the fifth seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament.

Two Brewers had double-doubles with Ariella Rosenthal and Sophie Nick both putting up big numbers. The senior, Rosenthal had a team-high 17 points and 13 rebounds while Nick, the sophomore, put in 14 points and grabbed 10 boards. Kim Romanoff registered six points, six assists, and three rebounds against the Bombers.

Vassar had another strong start in the first quarter, tallying 22 points in the first 10 minutes. The Bombers came out ready to play as well, logging 23 points in the first frame. The pace slowed down in the second stanza as the two sides combined for just 19 points. The Brewers were able to take a four-point lead into the break.

The game went back and forth in the third with Ithaca tying up the game twice. With just 12 seconds on the clock in the quarter, the game was all knotted at 41-41. Maeve Sussman nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to put Vassar ahead by three heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Brewers never got more than one possession ahead of the Bombers in the fourth and they eventually tied the score at 54-54 midway through. After Ithaca took a quick lead, Nicole Teta drilled a three-pointer to give the one-point lead back to the Brewers.
Rosenthal extended the lead to three, but the Bombers answered a few minutes later to tie the game at 63-63 with 21 seconds on the clock.

A good free-throw from Julie Yacovoni put the Bombers ahead by one with 15 seconds remaining and the home side was able to hold on for the one-point win.

Vassar shot the ball well on the day, going 23-57 (.404) from the floor, including 8-15 (.533) from deep.

The Brewers will face fourth seeded St. Lawrence in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday, February 20 at 6 p.m. in Canton, NY.
