CANTON, NY (February 20, 2018) – The Vassar women's basketball team took down St. Lawrence, 53-48, in the First Round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday night in Canton, NY.
It was the Brewers first conference tournament win since Vassar topped St. Lawrence in the 2014 league championship game.
Maeve Sussman and
Isa Peczuh paced the Vassar offense with 13 points apiece.
Ariella Rosenthal chipped in 12 points, while
Sophie Nick added six points and seven rebounds.
The Brewers and Saints were all squared at 12-12 after one. Rosenthal scored 10 quick points in the quarter to guide Vassar.
Peczuh entered the game in the second and put up 13 points. She was a perfect 5-5 including 2-2 from deep in her limited action in the period. It helped guide the Brewers to a 12-point lead at the break.
Maeve Sussman secured that edge as she drained a three at the buzzer for Vassar.
Vassar struggled out of the break, scoring just four points in the third as St. Lawrence clamped down on defense to cut the lead to just five. With the score 40-35 at the beginning of the fourth, the Saints slowly made their way back.
St. Lawrence got out in front, 44-42 with 5:26 on the clock. Sussman scored a bucket to knot the game at 44-44 just a few possessions later. After the Saints went up by two again, Rosenthal deadlocked the game at 46-46 with 3:05 to play.
Nicole Teta put Vassar in front with a three-point basket with just 95 seconds to go. The lead would stand for the Brewers even after St. Lawrence brought the game within one. Nick scored the final four points for Vassar at the line as they went on to win 53-48.
With the win, the Brewers advance to the Semifinal Round on Saturday, February 24 against the top seeded Skidmore Thoroughbreds.
