GENEVA, NY (February 16, 2018) – The Vassar women's basketball team lost 64-84 on Friday night at William Smith in Liberty League action. The Brewers fell to 11-6 in conference play with one game to play in the regular season.
Sophomore
Sophie Nick tied her season-high with 25 points to the lead the Brewer offense and grabbed eight rebounds while recording two blocks on the night.
Ariella Rosenthal had 14 points and six rebounds for Vassar as
Maeve Sussman also had a productive night with eight points and three assists.
Both teams contributed to a high scoring first quarter as the Brewers led 25-22 after the first 10 minutes. The Herons fought back before the half and grabbed a two-point lead heading into the break. William Smith used four straight points from Mia Morrison to cut the lead to just one. Vassar regained the lead and built it back up to four after Sussman put in a layup.
Over the next 30 seconds, the Herons scored four straight points to tie the game at 39-39 with just over a minute to play before the halftime buzzer. Morrison added another bucket before the end of the half that put her side up by two.
In the second half, the Brewers were held to just 25 points, while the Herons put up 43 to take a commanding lead. William Smith slowly built their lead in the third stanza outscoring Vassar 20-12 to grab a 10-point advantage. The Herons led by as many as 22 in the final period before the Brewers were able to cut it to just 20 by the end of the contest.
For the game, Vassar shot 43.5% from the floor. After opening the game with 54.55% shooting in the first half, the Brewers shot just 31.03% in the second. The team was cold from the three-point line with just 3-19 shooting from deep.
The Brewers conclude regular season play tomorrow at Ithaca at 2:00 p.m.
