Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bombers Late Comeback Downs Brewers

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team scored the opening three goals, but Ithaca netted four unanswered in the second half to achieve the 4-3 win. A late header by Ithaca's Jon Kyriakidis prevented the draw and moves the Bombers' to 12-2-3 overall and 5-4-0 in the league. Meanwhile, Vassar slips to 9-6-0 and 5-4-0 in league play.

The Brewers got on the board first after Bombers' goalkeeper Max Lichtenstein made the initial save off a Kevin Baliat (Eldoret, Kenya) shot. Baliat then collected his own rebound and knocked the ball into the left corner of net to put Vassar up 1-0 at 28th minute. Vassar kept Ithaca scoreless, but the teams competed evenly in the half.

The Brewers struck early in the second half off a Toby Stansell (Seattle, WA) corner at 48:40. Jordi Martinez (Takoma Park, MD) picked up the cross from the outside and passed quickly to an open Henrik Olsson (Tokyo, Japan) for his third goal of the season. Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) nearly scored two minutes later when he hit post, but it was not until the 61st mark that the junior found net. After a Bombers' yellow card, Mrlik scored six seconds later to push the lead to 3-0.

Momentum began to swing Ithaca's way after a Vassar foul gave the Bombers' a penalty kick at 64:14. Nate Schoen was able to capitalize and cut the Brewers' lead to 3-1. Following the goal, the Bombers' did not allow a single Vassar shot or corner attempt for the remainder of the game.

Ithaca scored again when Jack Monnes chipped a pass from 10 yards out to Kevin Turi, who got past Will Marment (Stamford, CT) for the goal. Three minutes later, the Bombers tallied another goal off a corner scramble in front of the net. This time, Thomas Pierce for Ithaca tabbed the goal to tie the game 3-3 with six minutes remaining.

Overtime was not in Vassar's future when a short cross from Turi was headed in by Kyriakidis in the final minutes of play.

Vassar secures the No. 5 seed in the Liberty League Tournament and travel to Geneva, NY on Tuesday, Oct. 30 to face Hobart.
