GENEVA, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team's season came to an end in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The Statesmen used a pair of first half goals to pull away early, but the Brewers attempted a late comeback in the second that just was not enough as Vassar fell 4-2.
With the win, Hobart moves to 8-7-2 overall and advances to the Liberty League semifinal game. Meanwhile, Vassar closes the season with a 9-7-0 record.
Most of the action took place in the midfield from the start. Vassar was only able to manage four shots against the Hobart defense compared to the Statesmen's' eight. Corner attempts were light on both sides, with each team only taking two throughout the game. Hobart scored first after Binjo Emmanuel stole a Vassar clear and dribbled through the defense and connected for the shot. Two minutes later, Mouhamed Diouf fired from the top of the box into the upper half of the cage.
The Brewers struck back at the 36
th minute after an
Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) corner. In a scramble in front of the net,
Eamon Geraghty (Oneonta, NY) slipped the shot past the Hobart goalkeeper for his first-career goal and kept it a one-goal game heading into halftime.
Six minutes into the second, Hobart scored off a free kick form 25-yards out by August Martini. Vassar answered 10 seconds later when
Mattie Mrlik (San Francisco, CA) stole the ball at the 20-yard line and launched a shot in to the far left post to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Brewers would take six shots in the half, but a Statesmen goal at 72:01 put an end to the Brewers' comeback. Pete Critchlow took a pass from Jack Bizub in the center of the Vassar cage and slipped the attempt pass the goalkeeper.
Alec Kaminer gets the win for Hobart and he also made four saves.
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) had three saves in the loss.
