TROY, N.Y. – For the fourth consecutive season, the Vassar College women's soccer team is headed to the Liberty League Tournament. The Brewers (9-5-1, 5-3-0 Liberty) clinched a spot with a 1-0 victory over RPI (4-9-3, 1-5-2 Liberty) at East Campus Stadium on Wednesday night in their final road game of the regular season.
Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA) gave Vassar the only goal it would need in the fifth minute. The Engineers nearly tied it four minutes later, but
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) turned aside a pair of RPI attempts, and the Brewers took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
After a
Jordan Moss (Tustin, CA) shot hit the crossbar in the 61
st minute, RPI nearly found an equalizer in the 70
th minute. Walsh got her fingertips on Emily Kaplan's blast at the last second, though, keeping Vassar in front. That would prove to be the Engineers' best scoring chance, as the Brewers held on for their second straight 1-0 road triumph.
The game's lone goal was Andrews' fourth tally of the year, three of which have been game-winners. Walsh (8-5-1), meanwhile, was credited with eight saves in her second consecutive shutout.
RPI outshot Vassar 13-10 in the contest, with Whitney Wisnom firing four shots. Joey Lyons (4-9-2) took the loss after making two saves over the first 79 minutes. Alex Benfatti played the final 11 minutes in goal for the Engineers.
On Saturday, Vassar concludes the regular season with a 2 p.m. matchup against Ithaca (12-2-2, 6-20 Liberty). The Brewers, who can be seeded anywhere between second and sixth in the Liberty League Tournament, will secure at least the No. 4 seed with a win. It will also be Senior Day at Gordon Field, as Vassar will honor its 10-member senior class prior to the game.
