POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar College women's soccer team (9-6-1, 5-4-0 Liberty) suffered a 3-0 loss to Ithaca (13-2-2, 7-2-0 Liberty) in its regular season finale at Marist College's Tenney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The contest was originally scheduled to be played at Gordon Field, but was moved due to poor field conditions caused by the inclement weather.
Despite the torrential rain and strong wind, which continued throughout the game, Vassar still held its pregame ceremonies honoring the squad's 10 graduating seniors. Each of the seven healthy seniors started the contest, as well.
With the winner guaranteed second place and a first-round bye in the Liberty League Tournament, Ithaca struck first just 90 seconds into the contest. Alex Epifani took a cross from Elise Leavitt and put it into the back of the net, giving the Bombers a 1-0 lead. Epifani added another tally in the 33
rd minute, when she sent a blast from 10 yards out into the upper left corner.
Vassar appeared to cut its deficit in half early in the second half, but the goal was waived off. The Bombers then increased their advantage to 3-0 on Ally Christman's goal in the 66
th minute.
Goalkeeper
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) (8-6-1) made six saves and took the loss.
Sara Seper (New Hyde Park, NY) and
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA), meanwhile, were each credited with two shots on goal for the Brewers.
Epifani's two goals were her league-leading eighth and ninth of the season, while Christman's tally was her second. Stacey DiGiorgio (1-0-0) registered four saves in the shutout.
As a result of the loss, as well as Saturday's other scores around the conference, Vassar will be the No. 6 seed in the Liberty League Tournament and visit third-seeded RIT (10-4-2, 5-2-2 Liberty) in the first round on Tuesday. The Brewers have already earned a win at RIT this season, defeating the Tigers, who were ranked 15
th nationally at the time, 2-0 on Sept. 22.
