POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The visiting Engineers (8-8-1, 5-3-0 Liberty) scored two goals in the final 16 minutes of play to pull off the 2-0 win over the Brewers (9-5-0, 5-3-0 Liberty) on Wednesday afternoon. Danny Corridan tallied the eventual game winner at the 74
th minute to keep RPI and Vassar tied for third in league standings.
The Brewers outshot their opponents 9-4 in the first half, but were unable to connect for a single shot on goal. Defense held the Engineers in check, but RPI surged in the second with a 13-3 shot advantage.
While Vassar held off a relentless RPI offense, Corridan finally broke through at the 74
th minute.
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) made the initial save from a Dylan Confair shot, but Corridan collected the rebound and launched the shot into the upper left corner to take the late lead.
The Brewers had a chance to answer five minutes later when
Kevin Baliat (Elderet, Kenya) drew a penalty kick. Baliat attempted to fake out the Engineers' Luke Brezak and fired the shot to the low left post. Brezak read it perfectly and kept Vassar off the board.
RPI pushed its lead at the 84
th minute when Billy Chissoe slipped a pass through the Brewers' defense to Tommaso Valagussa, who only had Marment to beat.
Marment started in goal, and recorded a season-high seven saves.
Vassar wraps up the regular season on Sat. Oct. 27 when they travel to face Ithaca at 2 p.m.
