GENEVA, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey team did not slump after clinching the No. 1 seed on Friday, and shutout William Smith 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) and
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) were the two Brewers' scorers.
With the win Vassar, moves to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the Liberty League, while William Smith slips to 5-10 and 2-5 in league play.
While the Brewers did not score until the second half, the defense did not allow a single Herons' shot in the opening stanza and only allowed one shot in the game. Vassar finished the game with 17 shot attempts along with a 7-1 penalty corner advantage.
Offensively, Vassar opened the game with four shots in the first six minutes with two corner attempts. In an otherwise uneventful first half, the Herons' defense kept the Brewers in check with William Smith goalkeeper Alexandra DeVito making four saves.
The Brewers opened the flood gates in the second half with Caveny making the first shot on goal and then
Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE) made her attempt soon after. After a timeout by William Smith, the Brewers'
Emily Poehlein (Northampton, MA) fired the shot on goal and More collected the rebound for another shot. Caveny then picked up the goalie save and rebounded the shot into the back of the net to put Vassar up 1-0 at the 54
th minute.
The Herons had no chance to answer with the Vassar defense shutting down any passes and not allowing a single shot or corner for the remainder of the game. At the 67
th minute, Caveny made a short pass from the right post to Lopez in front of the net. Lopez then picked up her fourth goal of the year.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) records her seventh shutout of the season with the win.
The Brewers wrap up the regular season with two non-conference road games against Scranton on Oct. 24 and New Paltz on Oct. 27. Vassar returns home on Oct. 31 for the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament.
