Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 6 Brewers Shutout Royals

SCRANTON, PA – The No. 6 Vassar College field hockey team scored early and against Scranton. Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE) tallied the first goal at the 7th minute, and the Brewers continued to pour on the pressure from there.

With the win, Vassar has won 13 straight and moves to 15-1 overall. Scranton slips to 12-4.

The Brewers were threatening early when a shot by More was deflected by Royals' goalkeeper Jenna Cyr. More stuck again soon after when she hit post from her third shot attempt. Things finally worked out when at 7:31 the senior fired the shot from the far post and in for her eighth goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) lined up for a penalty corner. Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) had the first shot off the insertion, but Young was able to pick up the goalie deflection. Young knocked the ball up and Grace Amell (West Hartford, CT) batted the ball mid-air and into the back of the net.

The Brewers led 2-0 going into the half, while outshooting Scranton 14-1 and holding a 7-1 corner advantage.

Emily Poehlein (Northampton, MA) accounted for the next two goals. The first came after the Scranton goalkeeper deflected a Sam Plante (Watertown, MA) attempt; Poehlein picked up the rebound and launched the shot into an open cage. Six minutes later, Caveny passed Poehlein the ball after a corner and she one-timed the shot for her 12th goal of the year.

Natalie Johnston (Trappe, PA) recorded her first-career goal with less than one minute to play. The sophomore picked the ball after a scramble in front of the Scranton net, and slipped it through the defense to secure the 5-0 Vassar win.

Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) made four saves in net for Vassar, while Madison Maguire (North Kingstown, RI) picked up playing time as well. More and Poehlein led with four shots each. Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) also picked up a defensive save.

The Brewers finish regular season play with a non-conference contest at New Paltz on Sat. Oct. 27. Game is set to start at 1 p.m.
