GENEVA, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Vassar College women's soccer team did something it had never done before.
Skylar Herrera-Ross (Alameda, CA) scored in the 38
th minute and
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) made a career-high 15 saves, as the Brewers (8-5-1, 4-3-0 Liberty) upset No. 7 William Smith (11-3-0, 7-1-0 Liberty) at Cozzens Field. It was Vassar's first-ever victory in 20 all-time games against the Herons.
The Brewers' only previous result against William Smith was a 0-0 draw in the 2010 Liberty League Championship Game (a contest that the Herons eventually won on penalty kicks). Vassar snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Herons and defeated a ranked opponent on the road for the second time this season, having previously knocked off then-No. 15 RIT on Sept. 22.
It was the first meeting between the teams since last season's Liberty League Championship Game, and the Herons had three good scoring chances in the 22
nd minute. Walsh saved each one, though, keeping the contest scoreless. Vassar then got on the board in the 38
th minute when
Madio Wallner's (Incline Village, NV) shot was saved and the rebound went right to Herrera-Ross, who put it into the center of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Herons outshot the Brewers 19-3. However, Walsh came up with 10 saves in the period to keep William Smith off the scoreboard. William Smith fired four shots in the final two minutes, but two were blocked, one sailed wide and Walsh saved the other, as Vassar held on for the 1-0 win.
Both of Herrera-Ross's goals this year have been game-winners against ranked opponents. Wallner was credited with her first assist of the season. Walsh (7-5-1), meanwhile, turned aside 15 shots en route to her fourth 90-minute shutout in 2018.
William Smith goalkeeper Veronica Romines (7-1-0) was credited with four saves in the loss, which snapped the Herons' 59-game winning streak against Liberty League opponents. The last conference team to earn a result against William Smith was RIT, which played the Herons to a 1-1 draw in the 2012 Liberty League semifinals (with William Smith advancing on penalty kicks). William Smith's last conference loss was a 2-0 defeat at the hands of RPI on Sept. 28, 2012.
With the victory, Vassar moved into fourth place in the Liberty League standings with two games remaining. The Brewers play their final road game of the regular season at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday against RPI (4-8-3, 1-4-2 Liberty).
