POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 9 Vassar field hockey team (13-1, 6-0 Liberty) clinched the one seed in the Liberty League Tournament for the first time in program history after defeating No. 6 Rochester (14-1, 5-1 Liberty), 3-2. The Brewers are guaranteed to host the semifinals on Oct. 31.
In one of the more closely contested matches this season, the Rochester defense did not allow a Vassar shot until the 13
th minute. That lone shot happened to be a crucial one. In typical
Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) fashion, the senior lined up for the corner and picked up
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) at the top of the circle. Caveny launched the pass back to Young, who made the crafty shot five yards from the net and past the Yellowjackets' goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season.
Defenses controlled the pace soon after, with only one shot being taken in the next 12 minutes, but the Brewers played with some urgency in the final minutes of the half. After a succession of shots from
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) and Young, Caveny was able to pick up a defender deflection in front of the net and chip a shot in from the left post.
With a 2-0 lead heading into halftime, the Brewers faced a dangerous Rochester team that has not lost a game since Nov. 12, 2017. The Yellowjackets would score two unanswered with the first coming at the 48
th mark off a Nancy Bansach corner. She picked up Colleen Maille who found Amanda Strenk for their first score. Four minutes later, a perfect cross from Maya Haigis found a wide-open Lauren Sharpe on the right side to tie the game, 2-2.
Vassar controlled the ball following the score, not allowing a single Yellowjackets' shot for the remainder of the game. A couple of attempts from
Stephanie Palma (Manhasset, NY), Lopez and Young kept the pressure on the Rochester defense, but a costly penalty was the advantage Vassar needed. Palma took the penalty stroke and connected with the low left-side shot to take the late 3-2 lead.
In goal,
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) made two saves while Kate Kujawa made two as well for the Yellowjackets.Â
