Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Five Brewers Score in Shutout of Union

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 12 Vassar field hockey (12-1, 5-0 Liberty) team continued their ways following a 7-0 win over Union (5-8, 1-4 Liberty) on Sunday afternoon. The Brewers are on a historic 10-game winning streak after their ninth shutout of the season.

Vassar controlled both sides of the field throughout the day and held the visiting Dutchwomen to four shots while taking a season-high 40 shots. The Brewers offense managed five shots in the opening two minutes and eventually connected for the score at 5:44. Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) launched the penalty corner to Rylie Pope (San Diego, CA) at the top of the circle. Pope hit the shot to net, but Emily Poehlein (Northampton, MA) managed to redirect the shot past the Union goalkeeper.

Union had some chances to answer when they picked up a penalty corner at the 17th minute. Sarah Wilkinson and Charlotte Leyland made two quick shots in succession, but Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) was there for the impressive saves. The Brewers struck again at 21:42 off another Young corner. Young found Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE) at the top of the circle, who rocketed the ball through the Dutchwomen defense.

The team did not let down in the half, netting two more goals. After another corner, Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) made the initial shot on goal that the Union goalkeeper defected to Poehlein. The forward then tipped the pass back to Young for her first goal of the day. Two minutes later, Pope drew the penalty stroke and slipped the ball into the left post.

The second half was more of the same. After a Caveny shot on goal in the 39th minute, Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) found the ball a few feet out and passed to More to put Vassar up 5-0. Leading the team with eight shots, Caveny finally broke through the Dutchwomen defense at the 48:35 mark after taking the More feed.

Young then closed the game at 58:02 after capitalizing on the team's second penalty stroke of the day.

Rotolo started in goal and recorded two saves, but split time with Madison Maguire (North Kingstown, RI) who made one save. Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) and Monica Feeley (Harrisburg, PA) as tallied a defensive save each.

Vassar returns to action next Friday in a crucial league game against No. 6 Rochester. Game is set to start at 4 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
