POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After knocking off Clarkson on Friday, the Vassar College women's soccer team took the field for the second time in less than 24 hours for a matchup with St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Playing on back-to-back days for the only time this season, the Brewers (7-5-1, 3-3-0 Liberty) were unable to pick up a second straight victory, as the Saints (8-1-3, 3-1-2 Liberty) notched a 1-0 triumph at Gordon Field.
St. Lawrence scored the game's only goal in the 23
rd minute. Kira Murphy sent a cross into the box that Isabel Silvia headed past
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ). After some initial confusion as to whether or not the ball crossed the line, the officials signaled goal and the Saints led 1-0.
The Brewers had several solid opportunities at a tying tally, including a near-own goal late in the first half. In the second half,
Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA) put three headers on net, but each was saved by Samantha Allen. Andrews then fired a late header wide before Allen stopped
Sara Seper's (New Hyde Park, NY) attempt as the final seconds ticked down to clinch the 1-0 victory for St. Lawrence.
Allen (8-1-3), who has allowed just four goals all year, was credited with 12 saves in the victory. Silvia's goal was her second of the season.
Andrews attempted six shots, three of which went on target, as the Brewers outshot the Saints 25-11. Seper and
Dahlia Chroscinski (Hummelstown, PA) took four shots apiece, while
Savannah Cutler (Deer Park, TX) and
Ashley Ferry (Westfield, NJ) each registered three shots. Walsh (6-5-1) made three saves in net.
With the victory, St. Lawrence moved ahead of Vassar for third place in the Liberty League standings. The Saints have 11 points and the Brewers are sitting on nine points with three games remaining in the regular season.
Vassar will now have a week off before returning to action. The Brewers visit the Liberty League leaders, No. 7 William Smith (11-2-0, 7-0-0 Liberty) next Saturday at 2 p.m.
