POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA) scored in the 73
rd minute to give the Vassar College women's soccer team (7-4-1, 3-2-0 Liberty) a 1-0 victory over Clarkson (4-8-1, 0-5-0 Liberty) at Gordon Field on Friday afternoon. The goal, her third of the season, hit the left post before bouncing in, as the Brewers earned their first 1-0 win of the year.
"When it came over my head, I felt very smooth," Andrews said. "And when I went to strike it, I just felt like it was the right play in the moment. Fortunately when it hit the post, it still went in."
Vassar nearly got on the board in 34
th minute, when
Emma Tanner's (Florence, MA) shot went off the goalkeeper's hands and hit the bottom of the crossbar. It didn't cross the goal line, however, and was played out for a corner kick.
Sarah DeBenedictis (Norwell, MA) fired a great attempt off the corner, but Clarkson goalkeeper Elyse Green made the save to keep the game scoreless.
Eight minutes after Andrews put the Brewers in front, the Golden Knights nearly found an equalizer, as Ashley Abel got free and put a header directly on net.
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) was there to make the save, though, preserving the shutout.
Tanner and
Skylar Herrera-Ross (Alameda, CA) each put three shots on target, as the Brewers held a 23-2 advantage in that category. Walsh (6-4-1) earned the win after recording her third clean sheet of the year.
Green (3-8-1), meanwhile, made nine saves in a losing effort, including seven in the first half that kept the game scoreless.
The Brewers have less than 24 hours off before returning to action. St. Lawrence (7-1-3, 2-1-2 Liberty), which is just one point behind Vassar in the Liberty League standings, visits Gordon Field at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
