ITHACA, N.Y. – While the final score did not portray the game, the No. 12 Brewers managed to escape an upset-minded Ithaca on Friday afternoon. Â
Alyssa More (Wilmington, DE) scored the lone goal at the 45
th minute to give Vassar (11-1, 4-0 Liberty) the 1-0 victory over Ithaca (9-4, 2-2 Liberty). Vassar is currently on a nine-game winning streak following the win.
The Brewers completely controlled the day; allowing three Bombers' shots while taking 29 of their own. Ithaca goalkeeper Savanna Lenker faced 16 shots on goal, but was hard to break with her 12 saves on the day. Despite taking 18 shots in the first, the game remained scoreless going into halftime.
Playing with a sense of urgency, Vassar's
Emily Poehlein (Northampton, MA) fired a shot on goal in the opening seconds that was saved by Lenker.
Mikayla Young (Honesdale, PA) kept up on the action as well by taking six penalty corners in the first ten minutes of the second half. Vassar took 18 corners opposed to Ithaca's five in the game.
At the 45
th minute, Lenker came out of goal to defend
Grace Yacura (Ashburn, VA) who made a shot a few seconds earlier. Yacura then slipped a touch pass to a wide-open More who backhanded the shot into the right post. A late Bombers' comeback proved to be in vain, with the stout Brewers' defense allowing only two shots for the remainder of the game.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) started in goal and made one save along with her sixth shutout of the season.
Vassar returns home on Sunday to face Union at 1 p.m. at Weinberg Field. Â
