POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 9, 2018) – The Vassar women's basketball team got back on track with a 63-46 win over Skidmore on Tuesday night in the AFC. With the win, the Brewers improved to 3-2 in the Liberty League and 8-4 overall.
Sophie Nick powered the offense with 19 points and added eight rebounds.
Nicole Teta chipped in 15 points, while
Isa Peczuh came off the bench and tallied 12 points for Vassar. Leading the rebounding category was senior
Ariella Rosenthal who grabbed 11 on the night.
The Brewers led wire-to-wire and outscored the Thoroughbreds in all four quarters of the game. Vassar quickly ran out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter. A Teta three-pointer and a
Kim Romanoff jumper made it 13-5 at the 2:31 mark in the first. Four straight points for Skidmore cut the lead to four by the end of the quarter.
Vassar didn't slow down in the second stanza, running their lead to 15 points with under two minutes to play before the break. Back-to-back three's from
Samarah Cook and Nick made it 32-17, with the Brewers ahead. Skidmore would cut down the lead after Haley English hit two foul shots before the end of the period.
Four points apiece from Nick and Rosenthal in the third helped keep Vassar ahead, and starting the fourth quarter up by 15. Peczuh played phenomenal in the final 10 minutes, recording 10 of her 12 points with her final three of the night putting her team up by 20 with under two minutes to play.
For the game, Vassar shot 50% from downtown (9-18) with Nick leading the way hitting three of her five attempts. Overall, the Brewers shot 46.6% from the floor while their defense held Skidmore to just 32.3% shooting and 9.1% (1-11) from deep.
The Brewers also did not attempt a single free-throw on the night, something Vassar hasn't done since December 7, 2003 in a 71-57 win over Bryn Mawr College.
The Brewers have a few days off before two more league games this weekend beginning with RPI on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
