Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brewers Fall Short Against RPI

TROY, NY (January 12, 2018) – In a game that was tied at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Brewers found themselves just falling just short. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute came out on top 49-45 on their home court on Friday night.

Sophie Nick led all scorers as she tallied 12 points and added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Ariella Rosenthal chipped in 11 points and five boards for the Brewers. No other Vassar student-athlete had more than five points as freshman Ryan DeOrio had just that in her seven minutes of work.

Nick started the scoring as she knocked down a three pointer to put the first points on the board. In Vassar's highest scoring quarter of the night, they put up 15 in the first 10 minutes that was capped off by a jumper from Rosenthal. Their 15 points had them up by one heading into the second frame.

The Engineers remained close in the second quarter, even taking the lead with under two minutes to play. But a jumper from Maddie Leong and fast break layup as time expired by DeOrio put Vassar up two heading into the locker room.

Vassar quickly ran their lead up to six points out the break after Nick and Rosenthal knocked down three's for the Brewers. But RPI slowly chipped away bringing the game back within one possession. And with less than 19 ticks on the clock, Shaina Iton hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 38-38.

The fourth quarter had three lead changes as the two teams fought back and forth to get ahead. Nick put Vassar ahead with a three ball with 4:33 left on the clock and for nearly three minutes that lead held. But Elizabeth Eckhardt put in a fast break layup to get her side back on top.

The Brewers played tough defense and continued to hit layups to keep the game within one possession. As time expired they were forced to foul and send the Engineers to the free-throw line where they pushed their advantage out of reach.

Vassar is in action tomorrow afternoon at RIT at 2:00 p.m. as they face the Tigers in a Liberty League matchup.
