Freshmen Trio Helps Lead Brewers Past Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 9, 2018) – The Vassar men's basketball team earned a 67-59 Liberty League victory over Skidmore on Tuesday night in the AFC. The Thoroughbreds were receiving votes nationally in the D3Hoops.com poll and were previously undefeated (4-0) in conference play.

With the win, the Brewers have now won three of their last four games and are 2-1 in 2018, with both wins against conference foes.

"I thought our guys came out with great urgency tonight and they played confident basketball," said Head Coach B.J. Dunne. "We've been talking about the little improvements that we've been making throughout the course of the season and it all came to fruition tonight."

Vassar got big nights from three freshmen who combined for 35 points, 18 rebounds, four blocks, and two assists. Lance Tebay recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. B.J. White played a career-high 27 minutes while adding a career-best 11 points. Fellow rookie Zach Bromfeld rounded out the trio with nine points and eight rebounds.

Overall, Jesse Browne led the offensive output with a team-high 17 points and added a team-best four assists.

The Brewers found themselves in an early hole as Edvinas Rupkas tallied the game's first five points en route to his 32-point night. But organized offensive sets allowed Vassar to get back in the game and take a one point lead at 8-7 after Bromfeld powered through a foul for a layup.

The lead changed six more times in the opening half before White knocked down two crucial free throws to break a 25-25 tie at the 2:06 mark. A layup by Brown pushed the Brewer lead to four before Rupkus cut the deficit to two at the break.

Vassar came out determined in the second half and led for the final 20 minutes of the game. Tebay hit a three to open the secnd half scoring and Bromfeld's layup quickly gave Vassar a seven-point edge.

Skidmore played tough and cut the lead to just two points on three separate occasions. With the game tied a 46-46 with 10 minutes to pay in the game, Mason Dyslin knocked down two of his eight points to break the tie. The next six points came from the freshmen trio of White, Tebay, and Bromfeld to push Vassar ahead 54-48.

The Brewers had to ice the game on the free-throw line as the team went 7-9 on their attempts over the final three minutes.
