Tebay's Late Heroics Cap 15-Point Brewer Comeback

TROY, NY (January 12, 2018) – The Brewers overcame a 15-point second half deficit to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday night for the 69-66 win. Freshman Lance Tebay knocked down a late three-pointer with the game tied at 66 to give the Brewers their third Liberty League victory of the season.

Tebay had a career-night as he tallied a new best with 21 points while adding nine rebounds, three blocks, and two assists for a stat filled night. The freshman showed his range against the Engineers, knocking down fiver trifectas. Senior Jesse Browne matched the rookie's output with 21 points of his own.

As a team, Vassar used the long ball to their advantage going 12-22 (54.5%) from deep. Overall they shot 44.2% from the field.

The Brewers played well in the first half, building an eight-point lead over the Engineers. Browne's three at the 12:13 mark had Vassar up 18-10 at that point. But RPI slowly crept back into the game, pulling within one with just 95 seconds left before the break. The Engineers added two more layups before halftime to go up by three.

That momentum carried into the second half as RPI built their lead to 15 (63-48) with 6:46 left to play in the game. The Brewers shut down the Engineers for the remainder of the game, using a 21-3 scoring run to close out the game.

B.J. White got the run started with a layup, followed by two free throws from Alex Seff. Down by 11 at this point, Browne dropped in a three to cut the lead to single digits. The senior knocked in another trifecta to bring the game within five before both sides went quiet for nearly two minutes.

Paul Grinde made a steal at one end and got fouled to send him to the line for two shots. The big man hit both shots to put the game within one possession at 63-60. Moments later, Tebay hauled in a rebound and got fouled to send him to line where he hit both shots to cut the deficit to just one.

Asa Barnhill finally put RPI on the board after nearly four minutes without a bucket and put the Engineers back up by three.

Just one minute later, White converted on his free-throw attempts to make it a one point game with 90 seconds on the clock. On the next possession, Andreas Kontopidis converted at the free throw line putting the score at 66-64.

With under one minute to play, Vassar relied on their freshmen to close out the game. White made good with a layup to tie the game at 66-66. After an RPI turnover forced by Grinde, the Brewers took a time out to draw up their final play. Tebay found himself with the ball as the shot clock was expiring and he fired up a three ball to break the tie and give Vassar the lead with less than two seconds remaining.

The Brewers head to RIT on Saturday for more Liberty League action with a 4:00 p.m. contest against the Tigers.
