Strong Second Half Pushes Women's Basketball Past Clarkson

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 5, 2018) – The Vassar women's basketball team improved to 2-1 in Liberty League play with a 66-51 win over Clarkson on Friday night in the AFC. The Brewers have won two in a row to push their overall record to 7-3.

Senior Samarah Cook had her best offensive outing of the season as she tallied 11 points while dishing out four assists and grabbing three rebounds. Sophie Nick led the way with 16 total points and grabbed eight boards. Nicole Teta added 11 points and Ariella Rosenthal grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Brewers brushed off a slow first half to take down the Golden Knights, outscoring the opposition 40-19 over the final 20 minutes. Vassar was down at the break 32-26 and inserted Julia Roellke into the starting line up to start the third quarter.

Clarkson built their lead to 11 near the halfway mark of the period, but that's when VC began their march. Back-to-back three-pointers from Nick and Teta cut the deficit to five. A trifecta from Cook and a layup from Rosenthal had the Brewers within two with just over a minute left in the quarter. And with under 10 seconds to play in the frame, Cook tied the game with a layup and converted the free throw attempt to put the Brewers up one.

Vassar stretched their lead in the fourth as Teta and Roellke added layups and Rosenthal knocked down a three as the Brewers lead grew to eight. The Brewers final nine points of the game came at the free throw line as Rosenthal, Cook, and Teta sealed the win for VC.

The Brewers are back at it tomorrow in the AFC when they host St. Lawrence University at 2:00 p.m.
