ROCHESTER, NY (January 13, 2018) – Down by six at the half, the Vassar women's basketball team led by senior
Kim Romanoff and a career-high 18 points knocked off the Rochester Institute of Technology, 75-70, on Saturday afternoon.
The Brewers improved to 4-3 in the Liberty League and gave the Tigers their first conference loss of the season.
Romanoff registered a career-high 18 points off 7-9 shooting from the field and was 3-5 at the free throw line.
Samarah Cook also had the highest scoring game of her career as she chipped in16 points, shooting 4-7 from downtown.
Ariella Rosenthal registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while also adding five assists, and two steals. Rounding out the top scorers,
Sophie Nick added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Brewers.
No team led by more than seven points at any moment in the game and the Brewers had the early advantage. Vassar had the lead after a back and forth opening quarter, 19-18.
RIT regained the lead in the second 10 minutes and jockeyed a five point lead after Jessica Glaz hit a three-point shot. Three minutes later, it was
Isa Peczuh's three that put Vassar ahead by one. But with the score tied at 34-34, the Tiges put together an 8-2 run to close out the half and head to the locker room up by six.
Vassar came out hot in the third period, outscoring RIT 21-13 in the frame to regain the lead. A jumper by Nick followed by a
Nicole Teta three and a Romanoff layup had the score all tied up at 47 with under five minutes on the clock. Teta then hit back-to-back three's as the Brewers found themselves ahead by four later in the stanza.
RIT put together a quick burst of six points to make the game all square at 65-65 at the 3:51 mark. But Rosenthal answered with a three ball and Nick hit her jumper on the next possession to put the Brewers back up by five. Vassar would ice the game on the line as Romanoff and Nick each converted three free-throws to give the Brewers the victory.
The Brewers stay on the road for a pair of Liberty League matchups next weekend beginning on Friday at Union College at 6:00 p.m.
