POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 30, 2017) – The Vassar College women's soccer team played a complete 90 minutes Saturday afternoon, defending Gordon Field well by picking up a 2-0 Liberty League win over Union College on a cold, windy afternoon.
The win was pivotal for the Brewers (6-2-2, 2-0-1 Liberty), as Vassar heads out on the road for its next four games, three of which are in conference play. The win moved the Brewers' unbeaten streak to six games, earning five wins and a tie over that stretch. Union fell to 4-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Liberty League.
Vassar would earn the game's first solid chance, as freshman
Ashley Ferry got in behind the Union defense but her chance in the 13
th minute went right to the stomach of Dutchwomen goalkeeper Kelsey Hartsoe. Seven minutes later, junior
Audrey Pillsbury had a solid opportunity as well, but her shot was once again stopped by Hartsoe.
The visitors would start to get some things going in the middle part of the first half, nearly scoring in the 22
nd minute after a free kick rattled around in the box, but shots by Sydney Keane and Katie Monahan were both blocked by the VC defense. At 25:38 of the game, Union had another good chance but the Linsey Giles shot was stopped by freshman
Fiona Walsh.
Giles would continue to pepper Walsh with shots over the next 10 minutes, but Walsh stopped one and watched a pair sail just wide right of the post as the game continued scoreless. The contest looked like it would go into intermission scoreless, but Vassar got on the board at 43:16 of the game as sophomore
Savannah Cutler finished a low, hard cross from senior Amanda McFarland into the left corner netting to put VC up 1-0 at the break.
After the intermission, VC went right back on the offensive as Ferry had a glorious attempt thwarted by a diving save from Hartsoe. VC earned two corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of second half, and the second would pay off with one of the best goals of the season for the Brewers.
In the 57
th minute, senior
Carolina Alvarez played a corner into the box but the service was headed out by the Union backline. After a few bounces, junior
Sara Seper lined up the bouncing ball and hammered a shot into the top right corner for the world class score. It was Seper's first goal of the season, and third tally of her career.
The second goal would prove to be plenty for the Brewers, who allowed just two more shots over the final 32 minutes of the contest in rolling to the clean sheet win. Vassar earned a 19-11 shot edge on the Dutchwomen Saturday, though Union held a slight 7-5 advantage in the corner kick department.
Walsh finished with five saves to earn her second consecutive shutout, while the freshman keeper has allowed just one goal in her last 242:71 minutes of action. Hartsoe made nine saves between the pipes for Union, while Giles and Cutler each fired five shots apiece to lead their respective teams.
Vassar will now head out on the road Tuesday to start its road trip, traveling to Hoboken, NJ to battle No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference test of the season for the Brewers.
