POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 26, 2017) – The Vassar College women's tennis team will open its dual match season this upcoming Saturday, competing in a split doubleheader against Union College and Bard College. VC will host the Dutchwomen on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. on Josselyn Courts before heading up Route 9 to battle the Raptors of Bard College in the afternoon.

Last Time Out: The Brewers sent five players into the singles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional, while also having two doubles squads at the event in Saratoga Springs, NY this past weekend. Freshman
Frances Cornwall was Vassar's top performer in the singles draw, as she advanced to the quarterfinals before falling in three-sets to eventual finalist CoCo Kulle of NYU. Cornwall and doubles partner
Meghan Rodick also made the Round of 8, while VC doubles pair of
Sarra Yekta and
Tara Edwards also were quarterfinalists.
A Look At The Brewers (0-0, 0-0 Liberty):
- The Brewers will set a lineup for the first time in 2017-18, and head coach Kathy Campbell will have plenty of options as eight players have four or more singles wins this season.
- Senior Kate Christensen moved into the top five in Vassar history in wins this past weekend, as she chalked up her 58th career victory in singles for VC.
- Freshman Frances Cornwall was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week Monday, and is second on the team in singles wins.
- Freshman Meghan Rodick was eliminated early in the ITA Regionals, but has still be stellar this fall, leading the Brewers with total victories with 14.
- The freshman class has been a fine addition to the team this season, going 21-10 in singles action while posting a 19-6 doubles mark thus far.
- Doubles pair Meghan Rodick and Frances Cornwall have been very strong in 2017-18, going 5-1 together.
- The Brewers have gone a remarkable 25-5 in doubles action this season, a winning percentage of .833.
- Campbell has been looking around at lots of different doubles teams so far, as she has used 17 different pairings.
- Sophomore Tara Edwards joined seniors Kate Christensen, Courtney Geiss, and Dasha Ivenitsky as the Vassar members with 20 or more career singles wins this past weekend.
A Look At The Dutchwomen (0-0, 0-0 Liberty):
- The Union women's tennis team has been improving over the last few years, picking up two conference wins and seven overall victories last year.
- The Dutchwomen lost its top victory getter from a year ago in Natalia Pronchick, but do return No. 1 player Natalia Pezzuco. Pezzuco earned eight wins at the No. 1 position in 2016-17.
- Junior Alex Greenberg is also back after earning four wins at the No. 4 position, while captain Julianne Loree was 6-5 in singles last season.
- Junior Paige Webster paired with Pezzuco to earn nine wins at No. 1 doubles last year. The doubles pair also won the consolation doubles draw at the ITA Regionals last Sunday.
- This past weekend, Pezzuco won the Consolation draw of the ITA Regionals, defeating Julia Frattaroli of the University of Scranton in three sets.
- Megan Brown and Loree won a match in the doubles draw before bowing out in the second round to eventual finalists from NYU.
A Look At The Raptors (2-3, 0-0 Liberty)
- Freshman Kate Esposito has been a strong addition to the Raptor clan thus far, as she has posted a team-best four wins at the No. 1 position.
- Junior captain Lily Zacharias has also won all four of her matches thus far this season, with two coming at No. 3 and two coming at No. 5.
- Senior captain Isabelle Scarborough is 2-2 this season, as she is riding a two-match singles win streak. Junior Amelia Tiemann has also won two consecutive matches, sporting a 2-1 mark at No. 2.
- The Raptors have played well in singles action this season, winning 53.3 percent of their matches individually.
- Scarborough and Zacharias have posted two wins at No. 2 doubles for the Raptors, while Esposito and Elizabeth Nicholson was 1-2 at No. 1.
- Bard College was the only Liberty League school that did not compete in the ITA Regionals last weekend.
Up Next: Vassar finishes its fall season this weekend, and will be dormant until after the New Year, taking on Division I Army to start the 2018 portion of its season on February 17, 2018 in West Point, NY.
