Women's Tennis Finishes Action At ITA Regionals

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (September 23, 2017) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team saw its run through the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the remaining players for the Brewers were eliminated in action from Skidmore College.

In the singles draw, senior Kate Christensen dropped a heartbreaker in the third round to eventual finalist Coco Kulle from NYU, falling in three sets. In the match, Kulle won the first set 6-4, but Christensen rallied to earn the second set in a tie-breaker 7-5. In the decisive third set, Kulle picked up a break and would go on to earn the set 6-3 to move on to the quarterfinals.

In other third round action, sophomore Tara Edwards matched up with No. 2 seed Sneha Rangu of the College of New Jersey but would come up short with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Frances Cornwall would advance the farthest of any VC player this weekend, as she picked up a third-round victory over Erica Meno of Skidmore College 6-0, 6-1.

In the quarterfinals, Cornwall drew Culle as the freshman looked to avenge Christensen's loss from the previous round. Kulle won the first set 6-4, just as she had against Christensen, and the script continued as Cornwall battled back with a 7-6 victory in the second set, taking the breaker 7-4. In the end though, Kulle would pull out her second straight three-set win over a VC player, as she moved into the semifinals with a 6-3 win in the third set. Cornwall had been dealing with sickness for much of the last two weeks,  so it was a gritty battle for her through the weekend.

In the consolation draw for the Brewers, freshman Meghan Rodick won two matches with victories over Nikaylah Williams of Cortland 8-2 and Michaelann Denton of William Smith 8-0. In the quarterfinals though, Audrey Chen of TCNJ would eliminate Rodick with an 8-5 score line.

In the doubles draw, VC had a pair of teams playing Saturday, but both would be eliminated in the quarterfinal rounds. Edwards and freshman Sarra Yekta would take on NYU pairing Flyora Shiyanova and Kulle, but would come up short 8-4. Cornwall and Rodick teamed up to battle Anna Maria Buraya and Judy Kam from NYU, but the Brewer pair was bested 8-2. Both NYU teams would advance to the finals of the draw, as Kulle and Shiyanova earned the title.

Vassar will now look forward to Liberty League action Saturday, September 30, hosting Union College at 9:30 a.m. before traveling to Bard College later in the day for more conference play at 4 p.m. in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.
