Strong 1st Half Gives Men's Soccer Win Over RIT

ROCHESTER, NY (September 23, 2017) –  The Vassar College men's soccer team kicked off Liberty League action with a 2-1 victory in Rochester over the RIT Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Brewers knocked in a pair of goals in the 45 minutes and played well enough in the second frame to take home the conference win. As a team, Vassar was outshot 12 to 10 with seven shots on target. The Tigers also earned more corner kicks than the Brewers 5-2.
 
Will Marment made his fifth start in cage for Vassar, picking up seven saves in his 90 minutes of work.
 
The Vassar offense got on the board quick as they drew a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Hayden Van Brewer lined up for the shot and buried it in the back of the net to put his side up 1-0.
 
In the 27th minute, Tanner Sands passed to Reid Smith who fed the ball to Jose Novas a who was able to score to the ball into the near corner of the goal.
 
Vassar held the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break. In the second period, RIT held the Brewer offense in check, allowing just three shots and not giving up a single corner kick to the Brewers.
 
In the 81st minute, Simon Garno launched a free kick that found the head of Jared Short who was able to put it on target. With the goal, the home side cut the deficit in half with under 10 minutes to play.
 
Vassar's win marks their sixth consecutive win over a Liberty League opponent dating back to last season.
 
Van Brewer's goal was his fourth of the season and now ties him atop the team lead with Mattie Mrlik, but also gives him the overall points lead with 10 this season.
 
The Brewers will match up with Bard on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on Gordon Field for their second Liberty League contest of the season.
