Men's Soccer Improves To 2-0 In League Play

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 27, 2017) – The Vassar College men's soccer team moved to 2-0 in Liberty League action with a 1-0 victory over Bard on Gordon Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Will Marment registered his first shutout of the season and second overall for the Brewers this season. The sophomore played the full 90 minutes in cage, picking up three saves. The back line in front of him played strong all game, allowing just four total shots.

"We certainly were struggling to connect, we were slow and weren't really sharp, but we won," said Head Coach Andy Jennings. "It's three points in the league and we're happy that even though we didn't play well we still grounded out the result."

Vassar held the advantage on paper with 20 total shots against just four for the Raptors. The Brewers also had seven corner kicks while conceding just two.

Much of the first half was played in the midfield with both sides just trading possessions and not really taking care of the ball. Bard and Vassar headed into the locker room with a 0-0 tie after 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Brewers took control of the game and began breaking down the Bard defense. The Raptors really packed it in to try and make it difficult for Vassar.

VC broke through in the 62nd minute when Henrik Olsson played the ball to Jose Novas who was cutting into the box from the far side. The senior controlled the pass and took a low shot across the face of the goal and buried it in the far corner.

The Brewers had a number of other chances, but several shots went high or wide and the score was kept at 1-0.

Mattie Mrlik had seven shots on the day and three on goal to lead Vassar in both categories.

With two league wins already under their belt, VC heads to Schenectady on Saturday to face Union College at 2:00 p.m.
