POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 16, 2017) – Led by two freshmen on offense, the Vassar women's soccer team took home a 2-1 victory at Oneonta on Saturday afternoon.
The Brewers and Red Dragons were all square after 45 minutes of action, but scored a combined three goals in the second frame. After allowing a score early in the final half,
Ally Thayer and
Ashley Ferry recorded back-to-back goals to give their side the advantage and eventually the win.
Both sides looked evenly matched on the box score in the first half, with Vassar firing four shots to Oneonta's seven.
Fiona Walsh had three saves after the first 45 minutes in her sixth start for the Brewers.
Out of the break, the Red Dragons got on the board first with Christina Kornfeld found herself on the receiving end of a string of passes by Amanda Roney and Jess Downin. Kornfeld finished with a shot to opposite side of the goal for her first of the season.
But just 13 seconds later, two freshmen teamed up for the Vassar equalizer.
Emily Longo passed to Thayer who knocked it in for her first career goal. Then in the 76
th minute, Ferry dribbled into the box and fired a hard shot on goal that deflected off the Oneonta keeper and into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Vassar finished with 10 total shots and nine on goal.
Audrey Pillsbury and Thayer each led the way with two shots on target. Walsh played the full 90 minutes, making seven saves in total against 15 Red Dragon shots.
The freshman attacker, Ferry, now leads Vassar offensively with 13 points off four goals and five assists. She has notched a goal in four of her first six career matches and has goals in all three of Vassar's wins thus far.
