POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2017) – The Vassar College women's soccer team got 15 points Sunday afternoon from its freshmen class, as the Brewers knocked off visiting Elmira College 8-0 in the non-conference finale of the 2017 Vassar Invitational from Gordon Field.
The eight goals for the Brewers were the most in a game since the 2009 season opener, when Vassar hung 14 goals on Mount Saint Vincent in Yonkers, NY. It was the most that Vassar has scored on its home field since potting 12 against Purchase College September 20, 2008.
The Brewers held control of the game during the early going, taking the first five shots before Elmira fired its only attempt of the game, as freshman keeper
Fiona Walsh was required to make a save. VC would get on the board at the 22:58 mark of the opening half, as senior
Amanda McFarland took a pass at
the top of the box and beat the keeper to the lower right corner for the goal.
Less than two minutes later, the Brewers doubled their advantage as freshman
Ashley Ferry made a great run and was
set free by fellow newcomer Hannah Daley, breaking in for the score to make the game 2-0 in favor of the hosts. Just before the break, Daley this time was the beneficiary of a
Ferry shot that bounced down and hit Daley before trickling over the goal line.
After the halftime intermission, Vassar would pot its fourth score of the day at the 54:46 mark of the contest, as
McFarland hammered home a perfectly struck free kick from 20 yards out. The offensive attack continued for the Brewers at 57:05 of the contest, as junior
Audrey Pillsbury headed in a cross from freshman Skylar Herrera-Ross to make the score 5-0.
Vassar nearly added its sixth goal of the game on a shot by
Carolina Alvarez that clanged off the post, but less than a minute later junior
Rachel Chernet knocked in a rebound of an Ally Thayer shot to make the score 6-0.
The Brewers would add two more goals in the late minutes to earn the win, as Vassar outshot its opponents on the afternoon 47-1. The 47 shots in a game were the most for a VC team since taking 48 in that 12-0 win over Purchase back in 2008.
Ferry finished the day with six points, posting a goal and four assists, as the four assists in one game were the most in a single game in program history. Daley added two goals and an assist for the Brewers, while McFarland scored on both of her shots that were on target. Freshman
Brenna McMannon tallied her first career goal as well for Vassar, which owned a 13-1 corner kick edge.
VC will be off for six days before heading out on the road for the first time since the season opener, traveling to Oneonta Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m. for a non-conference kick-off with Red Dragons.
