SOUTH HADLEY, MA (April 9, 2017) – The No. 39 ranked Vassar College women's tennis team upped its winning streak to nine matches Sunday, while also earning the team's third consecutive Seven Sisters Championship with a pair of 4-1 victories over Mount Holyoke College and No. 33 Wellesley College in action from Kendall Outdoor Courts at MHC.
"What an awesome and total team effort," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "Fiesty and gutsy team performance to defeat Wellesley while capturing our third consecutive Seven Sisters Champsionship." The Brewers started the day with a 4-1 win in the five-match format, which allows players to play in either singles or doubles but not both.
In that match, Vassar's top player in
Kate Christensen fell behind in the match to Ayame Yazawa 4-6, but rallied back with a strong 6-4 win in the second set. Christensen would pick up the win though at No. 1 singles, as Yazawa was forced to retire. VC also got a win at No. 3 singles thanks to yet another win by senior captain
Connie Yoo, as she posted another victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win.
Yoo has now won her last 10 matches, and leads all players on the team with 17 wins, while going 13-1 in dual matches this season. The Brewers also picked up both doubles points, as freshman
Tara Edwards and sophomore
Morgane Flournoy defeated Alexa Colas and Amy Chen 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 pairs. At No. 2 doubles, Vassar got a straight set win from junior
Dasha Ivenitsky and freshman
Vista Grinde with scores of 6-4, 6-0.
The win set up a match against Wellesley for the title, which it came down to last year as well when Vassar earned a 3-2 win over the Blue to pick up their second of the three titles over the last three years. All five matches went on at the same time, so the action was fast and furious as both ranked squads looked for the win.
Vassar would pick up the first win at No. 1 singles, as Christensen rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sarah Yan to put the Brewers up 1-0. Just minutes later, VC took another win at No. 2 doubles, as Ivenisky and Grinde chalked up their second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to put the Brewers to within one win of the title.
That victory would come at No. 3 singles, as Yoo clinched the win for the Brewers with another straight set win, posting a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Korina Hernandez to keep the trophy in Poughkeepsie for another year. Right after that decision, Wellesley picked up its first and only win of the match, as Justine Huang earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over senior captain
Shayna Becker at No. 2 singles.
With the match already decided, No. 1 doubles was the last match to finish on Sunday, and Flournoy and Edwards rallied from a 6-2 defeat in the first set to pick up a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) thrilling win to finish the tournament. The Brewers saw five members earn All-Seven Sisters accolades, as Edwards and Flournoy along with Ivenitsky and Grinde were selected as doubles pairs. Yoo also was selected for the Brewers after her four wins on the weekend.
Mount Holyoke finished third with a 2-2 record, while Smith College was fourth with a 1-3 mark and Bryn Mawr College took fifth place. Vassar will now travel to No. 21 MIT next Saturday afternoon, April 15 at 3 p.m. in Cambridge, MA for a big match featuring national and regionally ranked foes.
