Brewers Fight Hard to Preserve Win

One could not have had a more contrasting match-up. The offloading and passing game of CCSU and the route-one direct line of the Vassar attacks.
Central had some very big lads up front and plenty of pace behind but the Vassar forwards did an excellent job of getting low at the breakdown and were able to maintain possession. CCSU spun the ball down their backline but Vassar's pressure was such that passes went astray and mistakes were made.

Charlie Hooghkirk was always a threat at scrumhalf and it was he who opened the Vassar account with a well taken try after good work from the forwards. Evan Roberts scored a second try for Vassar and Stephen Kpundeh kicked the conversion so 14-0 looked a defendable lead.

But credit CCSU as they rallied and put enormous pressure on the Vassar defense. Their big forwards crashed near the Vassar goal line and after a long spell eventually they went over. But time was not on their side and 14-7 was the final. The whole Vassar team deserves praise for being utterly stubborn as an earlier try might have put the result in jeopardy.
