SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 22, 2017) – No. 20 Skidmore College took all six flights of singles action, pulling out a marathon 4:30 match against the No. 40 Vassar College women's tennis team 7-2 in Liberty League action from Saratoga Springs, NY Saturday afternoon.
The hard fought match was much closer than the score indicated, as points were highly contested throughout the outing. The Brewers took a 2-1 lead after doubles, as No. 1 pair
Shayna Becker and
Tara Edwards of Vassar knocked off Michelle Fuca and Madie Benn 8-6. Benn and Fuca are ranked No. 6 in the Northeast Region, so the victory was a big upset for Vassar.
At No. 3 doubles, senior
Connie Yoo and junior
Dasha Ivenitsky pulled out a thrilling 9-7 victory, knocking off Jessica Ampel and Alexa Goldberg. At No. 2 pairs, Skidmore would pick up the win with an 8-3 victory over
Kate Christensen and
Morgane Flournoy, as the Throughbred pair of freshman Ada Wiggins and Brianna Greene salvaged doubles for Skidmore.
In singles play, Wiggins would knock off Christensen in straight sets with scores of 7-5, 6-3, and Fuca topped Edwards 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. At No. 4, Danielle Giannetti knocked off Flournoy 6-1, 6-0, and Green was able to get past Ivenitsky at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-0. No. 2 and No. 5 singles each went three sets, with thrilling back and forth points the entire time.
At No. 2, Becker earned the first set with a 7-6 (3) tiebreak victory, but Benn rallied to even the match at a set apiece with a 6-1 victory. In the third and deciding stanza, Benn picked up two breaks in earning a 6-2 victory. At No .5, Yoo also took an early match lead with a 7-5 victory in the opening set, but Renee Karchere-Sun picked up a 6-4 win in the second to draw even. In the third set, Karchere-Sun controlled play to pick up a 6-1 win and help clinch the singles sweep.
"Hard fought match," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "Both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles played crisp, clean doubles. Many closely contested singles matches. We played a little more up and down in singles but battled the entire way and made them beat us."
Vassar will have a week off before hosting Senior Day, when the team will honor its two seniors in captains
Connie Yoo and
Shayna Becker during the day against Rochester Institute of Technology at 10:30 a.m. on Josselyn Courts in Poughkeepsie, NY.
